Mahama, Akufo-Addo Cleared To Contest 2016 Polls, As Well As Two Others

Four candidates have been cleared to contest Ghana’s 2016 presidential elections after the Electoral Commission disqualified 13 aspirants.

The chairperson of the EC, Mrs. Charlotte Osei, announced on Monday that after careful assessment of the presidential nomination forms it is only the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), the Convention People’s Party (CPP) and an independent candidate Jacob Osei Yeboah who qualify to contest.

Incumbent President John Mahama will be facing off with Nana Akufo-Addo for the second time after the 2012 elections and they will be joined by the flagbearer of Ghana’s oldest party Ivor Greenstreet alongside Mr. Yeboah.

The EC disqualified the 13 others because the aspirants did not meet the regulations required in filling the nomination forms.

Among those disqualified include big weights such as Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom of the PPP, Dr. Hassan Ayariga of the APC, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings of the NDP and Dr. Edward Mahama of the PNC.

Some of the subscribers, according to the Electoral Management Body, sponsored more than one candidate with same names and voter registration details in filling the forms. The Commission has served notice it will refer the matter to the Attorney General for investigations and prosecution.
