GJA In Contempt Of Court For Awarding Anas – Lawyer
Lawyer for Justice Paul Dery, one of the High Court judges who were caught allegedly taking bribes in investigative journalist, Anas Aremeya Anas’ corruption expose’ in Ghana’s judiciary has said the Ghana Journalist Association is in contempt of Court for adjudging Anas best journalist of the year for that piece on judges.
Anas in that story captured 34 judges on video allegedly taking bribes to compromise justice.
He was on Saturday crowned the overall best journalist of the year 2015 at the 21st Ghana Journalist Awards (GJA) for that piece.
For his prize he took home a brand new Hyundai SUV.
Lawyer Nii Kpakpo Addo said given the merits of the story for which the journalist has been awarded is being challenged at the Supreme Court by his client, the association had no business including it in an award scheme and taking it through the process of judgement.
“The Supreme Court of this Nation has stated that the actions of Anas Aremeyaw Anas and Tiger Eye PI are unlawful in respect of showing that video to the general public, were unconstitutional and a slap in the face of common sense” Nii Kpakpo told Accra based Joy FM.
“…there are ongoing court proceedings and you still go ahead saying you are awarding the person? It is wrong! It is actually in contempt of court. Even if we don’t say anything at all, it’s a shame!” he said.
So far, 26 of the judges have been sacked after being found guilty of the charges proffered against them following evidence gathered from the video the journalist and his team produced.
The GJA awards ceremony held on Saturday August 27, 2016 saw over 20 awards given to journalists in various categories.
